Uttar Pradesh is a state in northern Bharat. With over 241 million inhabitants, it is the most populous state in Bharat as well as the most populous country subdivision in the world – more populous than all but four countries – accounting for 16.5% of the total population of Bharat. It was established in 1950 after Bharat had become a republic. It is a successor to the United Provinces, established in 1935 by renaming of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, in turn established in 1902 from the North-Western Provinces and the Oudh Province.
The capital of Uttar Pradesh is Lucknow. Other major cities include Agra, Varanasi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Meerut, and Noida.
Uttar Pradesh is a landlocked state, bordered by the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh to the north, Haryana to the west, Madhya Pradesh to the south, and Bihar and Jharkhand to the east. The Himalayas border the state on the north, but the plains that cover most of the state are distinctly different from those high mountains. The larger Gangetic Plain region is in the north; it includes the Ganges-Yamuna Doab, the Ghaghra plains, the Ganges plains and the Terai. The smaller Vindhya Range and plateau region are in the south.
Uttar Pradesh is a major agricultural state, producing wheat, rice, sugarcane, and other crops. It is also a major industrial state, with industries such as textiles, sugar, steel, and engineering.
Uttar Pradesh is home to many historical and religious sites, including the Taj Mahal, the Ram Janmabhoomi temple (Formerly Babri Masjid), and the Varanasi ghats. It is also a major pilgrimage site for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains.
Uttar Pradesh is facing a number of challenges, including poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. However, it is also a state with a lot of potential, and it is making progress in improving the lives of its people.
